If I was stuck on a deserted island, I think my biggest craving besides water would be Detroit-style coney dogs. A close second would be Chicago-style hot dogs. I love them both! We even have a wiener dog for a pet. That is how much I love them!  I have eaten them since childhood growing up in the Detroit suburbs. Everyone in Detroit has their favorite coney dog or chili dog location. They are found all over the city and the suburbs. One of my favorites is Leo’s Coney Island which is now a chain and continuing to grow in the state of Michigan. I like their quality of chili and the fact that they use Koegel’s Vienna dogs which in my opinion are one of the best casing-style hot dogs. Kowalski meats also make a great hot dog as well if you can’t find Koegel’s. There has to be a crunch when you bite into the dog. There is nothing worse than a rubber-like hot dog and an over-steamed bun which seems to be the case in the chains that say they have sold enough hot dogs to circle the earth five times and the ones you can put your name on the wall if you eat more than ten. Quality not quantity is the trick.

On Tuesday evenings the local Leo’s in our area has 99 cent Detroit-style coney dogs so we go there a lot for a date night. The food is great and the prices can’t be beaten. My wife usually orders a small Greek salad. I tend to eat only the dogs.

I have found, if you want to make your own, Aldi’s is awesome for savings. You can purchase Koegel’s Vienna dogs, sweet onions, hot dog buns and yellow mustard all at a fraction of the cost of a mega big box market. As long as the hot dogs are of the finest quality, the mustard and onions can be found anywhere. When hosting a dinner or a picnic, I like to serve them on plywood planks on top of parchment paper, smothered in onions with LOTS of napkins. Give these Detroit-style dogs a try. I think you will enjoy them. They are easy to make and tasty. There’s nothing better to snack on when watching a Detroit Tigers baseball game!
